The bookend Bonaparte crossing the Alps depicts the french emperor on horseback at the summit of the Grand-saint-Bernard Pass in the Alps. The model was originally inspired by Jacques-Louis David's famous painting in the museum of le Louvre, which was produced in five versions by the painter and reproduced in 1841 by Polish sculptor Piotr Michałowski in his statuary presented in the National Museum in Warsaw.

This representation marks an episode in the second Italian campaign, which began in 1799. It is one of the most emblematic representations of the First Consul Bonaparte, who would later become Napoleon.
