A unique bookend Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) depicting a clos-up from a painting carried out by the famous polish painter Jan Matejko, presented in the gallery of the Warsaw National Museum.

The Battle of Grunwald, which took place on July 15, 1410, is one of the most important events in Central European medieval history. The battle pitted the Union of the Polish Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, led by King Ladislaus II Jagellon of Poland and Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania, against the Teutonic Order, a German-Baltic military order. The context of the battle was complex. The Teutonic Order, based in Prussia, had extended its territory to the Baltic lands and Poland, giving rise to tensions and territorial conflicts. The Poles and Lithuanians, despite their religious differences, formed an alliance to confront the Teutonic Order. The Battle of Grunwald was a decisive victory for the Union of the Polish Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It considerably weakened the Teutonic Order and marked the beginning of its decline in Eastern Europe. The battle also strengthened the alliance between Poland and Lithuania, which eventually led to the Union of Lublin in 1569, forming the Republic of the Two Nations. The Battle of Grunwald is an emblematic event in Polish and Lithuanian history, celebrated to this day as a symbol of cooperation and resistance against foreign invaders. It has left an indelible mark on the collective imagination of these nations.
