The bookend Liberty leading the people is inspired by one of the most famous paintings in French history, created in 1830 by Eugène Delacroix. It depicts a barricade scene during the days of the July Revolution of 1830, which brought King Louis-Philippe I to the throne with the advent of a regime to be known as the July Monarchy.

Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) was a 19th-century French painter, considered one of the leading exponents of the Romantic movement. He is famous for his vivid, expressive palette, as well as for his ability to capture emotion and movement in his works.

Delacroix is best known for his iconic painting "Liberty leading the People" (1830), which depicts the July Revolution of 1830 in Paris. His artistic style was marked by a blend of realism and romanticism, with a preference for historical, mythological and oriental subjects. He traveled in North Africa, which strongly influenced his work, with works such as "Les Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement". Delacroix was also a master of the oil painting technique and contributed to the evolution of French painting.

His legacy lives on in French art history, and his works are exhibited in prestigious museums around the world, perpetuating his influence on future generations of artists.
